Raising Emotionally Intelligent Children

A personal example of knowing that I'm on the right track

I realized at 7:50 that beach camp didn’t start at 10 like I thought, but rather at 9.

And we needed to be in the car 45 minutes prior to that to get there in time…

So, I naturally kicked it into high gear…

Making lunches and doing all the things - rushing around barking orders at the kids to do this and that to get themselves ready…

My cortisol levels rising…

And then my six-year old approaches me with a calm, clear voice and says: “I’m feeling overwhelmed…because you’re talking like that.”

This utterance stopped me in my tracks.

‘WOW,’ I thought. This little person so succinctly and confidently named how she felt and then without skipping a beat backed it up with an observation about what was contributing to her feeling of overwhelm.

First and foremost, I felt SO proud of her for identifying and naming how she was feeling in that moment, without prompting.

And furthermore, she had the awareness about what was contributing to the feeling.

YES!!!

And also in this moment, I realized I, too, was feeling overwhelmed. And so I made the necessary adjustments to help myself feel better so that I could do better.

The process of Identifying and naming feelings in ourselves (and others) is an ongoing project, practiced time and time again…

My kids are reminded about how the things people say and do affect how we feel…

They practice emotional intelligence skills with me, with other trusted adults, and when they’re in Friendship Frogs (the in-person social-emotional learning class I facilitate).

I also help parents flex their emotional intelligence muscles when they participate in my classes/program and/or are on the receiving end of coaching.

Because this is what’s at the very foundation of healthy choices and healthy relationships.

Have you been feeling the pull to do less and slow down? And yet you still find yourself 'pushing through'? You're not alone. It seems this is a widespread phenomena amongst those with various backgrounds and roles. Our minds are continuously telling us to keep going with the doing and seeking... Even when we feel exhausted and can barely put one foot in front of the other. We reach for our phones to keep the busy going when there are 'breaks.' It's as if we are constantly avoiding something... It's almost like we're afraid to be still and just BE. We may, logically, know the value of honoring what our body/mind needs, yet we keep choosing the opposite, as if we aren't in control. And in this society that we live in, pausing and slowing down can seem unavailable - even impossible - and certainly undervalued. Enter intention and discipline. You see, If we want to experience more well-being and quality in our lives and in our relationships, we must be disciplined about self-care. We must be clear about our intentions to honor ourselves and our needs. This means getting specific . It means creating and sticking to a plan. And setting boundaries to protect the plan. I realize this may sound daunting and maybe even impossible... And this is where I come into the picture... I help people like you slow down by providing a container where intention is born and needs are uncovered so that a plan can be created to assist with honoring yourself and where you're at in your life. And you then you begin to experience the freedom to be the living, breathing, tuned-in and tapped-in being you were intended to be. Ready to get the support you need to honor yourself? I’ve made the conscious choice to reject the toxic negativity I see and hear surrounding the topic of perimenopause. To clarify, I’m choosing to view this phase in my life as a natural transition and a sacred invitation. An invitation to show up for myself - like a parent does for their child. To show up in a way that’s conscious and supportive. (NOT judgy and shaming) Feeling called to join me? I’m choosing to recognize that big changes are, indeed, taking place… Reminiscent of the pre-teen and teen years… Anxiety, irritability, pimples, headaches, inflammation, forgetfulness, shifts in sleep patterns, feeling extra tired, body appearance changes, etc. A recalibration of hormones is, indeed, taking place. And I’m choosing to have faith in my body’s process. And if we REALLY pay attention and listen, we gain insight into ways to offer ourselves support… It’s an opportunity to reparent ourselves, by offering compassionate, responsive care. Examples: -Resting when we feel tired, as opposed to ‘pushing through.’ -Noticing and validating uncomfortable feelings that manifest. -Replacing body-shaming tendencies with love and appreciation. Want to join me in cultivating a new, kinder and more functional relationship with yourself? And regardless, of what life stage you’re currently experiencing, I’m here to help.
